Türkiye Earthquake Emergency

Türkiye and surrounding countries shaken by 7.8 magnitude earthquake

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Türkiye and surrounding countries on the early hours of February 6th. The quake, which was centred around Southeast Türkiye, also caused considerable damage in Syria, and was felt throughout the region. Reports indicate extensive damage and over 33,000 fatalities, with potentially tens of thousands more expected as the rubble continues to be cleared.

Islamic Relief has local offices in the region and our teams are on the ground now in Türkiye and for displaced Syrians, delivering urgent aid.

The situation is dire as Türkiye hosts more than 3.6 million refugees, and millions are known to live near Pazarcik, the epicentre of the earthquake. The refugees are mostly confined to living in tents and have already been struggling with the harsh winter. The Turkish Authorities have requested assistance in responding to the earthquake and Islamic Relief is on the ground to provide life saving aid.

Fatalities, disruption and destruction

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Türkiye and Syria has resulted in over 20,000 confirmed deaths in Turkey and Syria, with over 13,000 more injured. People are trapped under rubble and civil defence has called for evacuations to open areas.

The earthquake was centred 33 km from Gaziantep, 26 km from Nurdagi, and 18 km deep. A strong 6.7 aftershock followed 10 minutes later. Türkiye’s AFAD agency reported the earthquake as 7.4, centred in Pazarcik. In nearby provinces, buildings have fallen but no immediate reports of casualties have been made.

Türkiye is located on major fault lines and can sometimes experience very severe earthquakes, with this latest also felt in Lebanon and Syria, causing building collapses in cities such as Aleppo and Hama.
