Fatuma’s Story: A Burden Lifted
Fatuma Bashir, widow and mother of 7, in Kenya struggles to feed and provide for her children. Here’s how Islamic Relief supported them.
Across the Horn of Africa, in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia, severe, multi-season droughts have caused sharp increases in food, water and nutrition insecurity.
In the hardest-hit areas of Somalia, families have lost everything. Countless of their livestock and crops have perished. To this day, tens of thousands of people struggle to access basic needs and are forcibly displaced.
Water scarcity in Badhan district, in particular, is destroying people’s livelihoods and displacing thousands of pastoralists from their homes in a desperate bid to source clean water and livelihood stability.
Islamic Relief is on the ground in Somalia and neighbouring countries. Our teams are implementing sustainable, life-saving water projects, helping communities combat water scarcity amid the ongoing.
One of our recent projects includes drilling a new borehole in Puntland, Somalia, providing 7,000 people with clean, safe water! With a 330-metre depth, the borehole provides 388,000 litres of water per day to the community.
The water system also includes a 20 cubic metre elevated water tank and animal troughs. The system is also solar-powered, which is more cost-effective and environmentally
friendly, making it easier for local communities to maintain.
