Restoring Sight. Rebuilding Lives.

Somalia Eye Cataract Project

The Somalia Eye Cataract Project is a life-changing health initiative led by Islamic Relief Australia, designed to prevent avoidable blindness and restore dignity, independence, and livelihoods for vulnerable communities in rural Somalia.

In regions where access to specialist eye care is extremely limited, cataracts remain one of the leading causes of preventable blindness. For many families, the loss of sight means the loss of income, education, and self-reliance. This project addresses that reality through comprehensive, high-quality, and completely free eye care services.

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT

The Somalia Eye Cataract Project provides screening, diagnosis, surgery, and post-operative care to people suffering from cataracts, with a strong focus on underserved rural areas. The project is based at a fully equipped health centre that serves as a year-round hub for cataract campaigns and treatments.

Through this initiative, 1,300 rightsholders will gain access to inclusive, dignified, and professional eye health services — helping them return to work, care for their families, and live independently.
