Sumud, or steadfastness, is a word that has become synonymous with the people of Palestine. Here is what it means and its significance.
Struggle and sumud are an integral part of the lives of Palestinian people, especially in Gaza.
Sumud (صمود), meaning steadfastness, is a defining value of the Palestinian people. It represents resilience, dignity, and non-violent resistance in the face of decades of occupation and oppression.
From the Nakba in 1948 to today’s ongoing struggles, sumud is seen in families rebuilding homes after bombings, replanting olive trees, and preserving culture and identity despite attempts to erase them.
In turn, for Palestinians, Struggle and sumud are deeply intertwined. Struggle reflects physical resistance to occupation. Sumud provides the framework and determination that sustains it.
More than just perseverance, struggle and sumud are a personal and collective act of survival, solidarity, and hope. A way to resist injustice while keeping alive the vision of freedom, justice, and self-determination.
Islamic Relief Australia is honoured to invite you to our National Gaza Tour 2025, taking place in October 2025, across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, and Perth.
This national tour will raise critical awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and share the impact of Australia’s response — powered by your support.
The tour will feature real stories, impact data, and video documentation demonstrating how your donations are saving lives and strengthening healthcare services in one of the world’s most affected conflict zones.
October marks two years of Israel’s relentless assault on Gaza. Months when countless number of innocent Palestinians have lost their lives, and at least one child has been killed every hour.
Despite the danger and despair, hope still emerges, and Islamic Relief has constantly adapted our response. This is what our work on the ground, delivered thanks to our supporters, has achieved in the last two years.
Since 1997, Islamic Relief has been on the ground in Gaza, delivering life-saving aid.
Our response intensified after October 7, 2023, when the crisis escalated like never before. Working with local partners and international organisations, we’ve provided millions of medical items, supported thousands with emergency care, and delivered vital maternal and child health services.
Through our partnership with the Palestinian Australian New Zealand Medical Association (PANZMA), specialised medical teams are deployed to Gaza, performing hundreds of surgeries, providing critical care, and equipping local hospitals with essential supplies.
Together, we are strengthening healthcare systems through training, capacity building, and sustainable medical support — ensuring that even in the most difficult conditions, families have access to urgent care, dignity, and hope.
