Solving food insecurity and malnutrition amid an ongoing crisis
Islamic Relief Australia is committed to enhancing the learning environment for Afghan refugee students in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by improving the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities at the region’s primary education facility.
The school serves approximately 1,600 students and employs 40 teaching and administrative staff, necessitating significant infrastructure improvements to meet the growing demand for adequate sanitation and hygiene facilities
The initiative focuses on rehabilitating the existing latrines and washrooms to improve sanitation conditions while also addressing the structural integrity of the school to ensure a safe learning environment.
Due to overcrowding, additional latrines and washrooms will be constructed to accommodate the increasing number of students. The rehabilitation of the sanitation system is a key priority, alongside the installation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system to power water pumps, ensuring a sustainable and reliable water supply.
To enhance accessibility, new pathways, ramps, and railings will be constructed to support persons with disabilities. Waste management will also be improved through the installation of incinerators and solid waste bins.
In addition, minor repairs and whitewashing of existing school buildings will be undertaken to maintain infrastructure quality. The rehabilitation of the water supply system will ensure consistent access to clean water, promoting a healthier school environment.
